Pregnancy massage, also known as prenatal massage, is a gentle treatment designed for the changing body during pregnancy. Many women ask if pregnancy or prenatal massage is safe and what are the benefits of prenatal massage. For most healthy pregnancies, prenatal massage is considered safe when performed by a qualified therapist and may help reduce tension, ease aches and pains, support relaxation, improve circulation, and encourage overall wellbeing during pregnancy.
During the pregnancy massage I use safe positioning, supportive cushions, and carefully adapted techniques to help the body feel more comfortable and supported during this time.
I always tailor treatments individually depending on the stage of pregnancy, comfort level, and any symptoms you may be experiencing.
Is Pregnancy Massage Safe?
For most healthy pregnancies, prenatal massage is safe.
Your comfort and safety always come first. I will adopt position, pressure, and techniques throughout the treatment to ensure both you and baby remain comfortable.
However, massage may not always be suitable in certain situations.
Pregnancy Massage Contraindications & Conditions Requiring Medical Approval
Pregnancy massage is gentle and safe for many women, however some medical conditions may require treatment to be adapted, postponed, or approved by a midwife or doctor beforehand.
High Blood Pressure / Pre-Eclampsia
High blood pressure during pregnancy can sometimes develop into more serious conditions such as pre-eclampsia. Symptoms may include swelling, headaches, visual disturbances, or rapid weight gain.
Vaginal Bleeding
Any unexplained bleeding during pregnancy should always be assessed by a healthcare professional before massage treatment.
Placenta Praevia or Placental Abruption
Placental conditions can affect the safety of treatment and require ongoing medical supervision during pregnancy.
Gestational Diabetes
Clients with gestational diabetes may still receive massage, but treatment may need adapting depending on symptoms and overall health.
Obstetric Cholestasis
This liver condition can cause intense itching during pregnancy and should always be medically monitored.
Severe Swelling or Sudden Oedema
While mild swelling is common in pregnancy, sudden or excessive swelling may require medical assessment.
Fever, Illness, or Infection
Massage is not recommended during active illness or infection.
Severe Abdominal Pain or Dizziness
Any unexplained pain, dizziness, fainting, or unusual symptoms should always be checked by a healthcare professional first.
Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (SPD)
Pregnancy-related pelvic pain may require adapted positioning and gentle treatment techniques for comfort.
High-Risk Pregnancy
If you have been advised your pregnancy is high-risk or are under specialist care, medical approval may be requested before treatment.

When Can You Get Pregnancy Massage?
I offer pregnancy massage from the second trimester onwards (after 12 weeks). Earlier treatment I may occasionally consider for existing clients on an individual basis.
Many women choose to book treatments during:
- The second trimester, when the body begins changing more noticeably
- The third trimester, when physical discomfort, heaviness, and swelling often increase
Some clients also continue with postnatal treatments after birth to support recovery and relaxation.
